Surgical Technologist (CVOR Tech) - Summary
- Assists surgical team throughout all phases of operative procedures, maintaining the highest standards of sterile technique and patient safety.
- Operates as a critical member of the surgical team, ensuring all instruments, supplies, and equipment are ready and functional for every case.
- Functions under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and works collaboratively with all operating room personnel.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Prepare operating room environment by assembling necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment ahead of each procedure.
- Consult and update surgeon preference cards as needed, reporting any discrepancies to the circulating nurse.
- Verify that all surgical instruments and equipment are in proper working condition before surgery.
- Ensure proper room humidity and temperature settings to maintain an optimal surgical environment.
- Open sterile supplies using aseptic technique and continuously monitor the sterility of all products on the field.
- Set up the sterile field methodically to facilitate clear counts and maintain organization throughout the procedure.
- Perform all counts of needles, sponges, and instruments according to department policy to ensure patient safety.
- Assist surgeon and circulating nurse with patient positioning and draping, following safety guidelines.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs, ensuring instruments are ready and within reach before they are requested.
- Uphold the "Time Out" protocol, ensuring all safety checks are completed prior to the start of the procedure.
- Accurately handle, identify, and label specimens, ensuring correct differentiation and documentation.
- Manage medications and fluids on the sterile field by visually confirming orders, checking labels, and labeling all containers.
- Assist with post-operative room turnover and prepare instruments for central processing by appropriately cleaning and disinfecting.
- Identify and report malfunctioning equipment with detailed descriptions to the appropriate department for repair.
- Maintain room stock and ensure unused supplies are returned to their designated storage locations.
- Support administrative and clerical tasks as needed to promote efficient operating room operations.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program is required.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification is highly desirable.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in an acute or long-term care surgical setting preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in sterile technique and surgical safety protocols.
- Ability to safely transfer patients and move equipment such as gurneys, IV poles, and wheelchairs.
- Flexibility to assist with a variety of tasks, including administrative and clerical support.
- Mandatory participation in night and weekend on-call rotation.
- Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to contaminated instruments, chemicals, fumes, and radiation.
