Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) - Summary
- Responsible for decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and tracking of surgical instruments and supplies.
- Supports clinical teams by ensuring availability and readiness of sterile instruments across multiple surgical specialties.
- Maintains compliance with sterilization standards and manufacturer instructions for use.
- Manages sterile supply inventory and CPR cart readiness.
- Trains staff and students on sterile processing procedures and equipment operation as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments for specialties such as general surgery, robotics, urology, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, ENT, OB/GYN, vascular, and orthopedic surgery.
- Prepare and organize instrumentation and supplies for surgery, utilizing appropriate sterilization methods.
- Monitor and track surgical instruments using automated instrument tracking systems.
- Maintain accurate records for all sterilization processes and supply inventory.
- Check and rotate stock to ensure sterile supply items are within expiration dates, removing outdated items as necessary.
- Maintain and restock CPR carts, including transportation and documentation for emergency preparedness.
- Assemble and disassemble instrumentation and equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
- Perform daily and weekly cleaning and function testing on all processing equipment.
- Participate in staff and student training, sharing best practices in sterile processing.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Completion of a sterile processing or supply training course.
- Current certification by the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management (IAHCSMM) or the National Institute of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel (CBSPD).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Minimum of three (3) continuous years of recent experience as a sterile processing technician, with at least one year within the last year in an SPD setting.
- Experience in instrument decontamination, assembly, preparation, and sterilization.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting processing equipment such as washer-disinfectors, sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners, and automatic endoscope reprocessors.
- Knowledge of a variety of surgical specialties including general surgery, urology, robotics, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, ENT, GYN, vascular, and orthopedic surgery. (Waivers may be considered on a case-by-case basis.)
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
