The School Nurse RN plays a pivotal role in promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of students within the educational setting. School Nurse RN - Summary
- Serves as the primary provider of healthcare services within the school.
- Acts as a liaison between students, families, school staff, and community healthcare resources.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable health regulations and school district policies.
- Supports the mission of promoting student health and academic success.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to students, including assessment, intervention, and evaluation of health concerns.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician orders and parent/guardian consent.
- Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for students with chronic health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or severe allergies).
- Conduct vision, hearing, and other mandated health screenings.
- Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid as needed.
- Monitor communicable diseases and coordinate with public health officials as necessary.
- Maintain accurate health records in compliance with privacy laws and school policies.
- Educate students, staff, and families on relevant health topics and preventive care practices.
- Collaborate with teachers and counselors to support students’ overall well-being.
- Participate in the development and implementation of school health policies and emergency response plans.
- Serve as a resource for health-related information and guidance for the school community.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred).
- Current CPR and First Aid certification; additional certifications in pediatric or school nursing are highly desirable.
- Experience in pediatric, community, or school nursing is preferred.
- Strong assessment, clinical, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
