The Risk Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing the risk management strategies for a leading contracting group, ensuring the company’s operations remain resilient and compliant with industry standards. As a Risk Manager, you will serve as a strategic business partner to executive leadership, providing insights and guidance to minimize liabilities and safeguard assets. This position is highly visible within the organization, involving collaboration with various internal teams and external advisors such as insurance brokers, third-party administrators, legal counsel, and surety partners. In this full-time Risk Manager role, you will be responsible for supervising the entire Risk Management Department, acting as a liaison between executive leadership, operational management, and third-party consultants. You will oversee the company’s commercial insurance and surety programs, lead the insurance placement process, manage claims, and support litigation and settlement activities. Your expertise will contribute directly to the company’s ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks, ensuring the safety and continuity of operations.
Working as a Risk Manager provides a unique opportunity to influence the strategic direction of the organization by shaping risk management policies and practices. By collaborating with other departments such as Safety, Finance, and Accounting, you will help develop and implement comprehensive risk mitigation strategies. The position also involves conducting training for company leaders, managers, and staff on insurance coverage, claims management, and risk identification, fostering a culture of risk awareness and proactive management.
This position occasionally requires travel to meet with executive management, attend branch locations, participate in mediations or hearings, and conduct essential training sessions. As a Risk Manager, you will also play a key role in evaluating and recommending improvements to existing insurance claim reserves, working closely with Finance and Accounting to ensure appropriate allocation of insurance costs across business units.

Risk Manager - Summary
- Acts as a strategic partner to executive leadership to assess and mitigate risks across the organization.
- Supervises the Risk Management Department and oversees insurance and surety programs.
- Serves as liaison with operational management, third-party consultants, and external legal counsel.
- Leads initiatives to strengthen risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies within a contracting environment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervise and provide leadership to the Risk Management Department.
- Manage all aspects of commercial insurance and surety programs, including relationships with brokers, claimants, TPAs, insurance companies, legal counsel, sureties, auditors, and advisors.
- Lead the insurance placement process for property and casualty lines of coverage: risk identification, exposure data analysis, underwriting submissions, policy review, and negotiations with brokers and carriers.
- Oversee placement and administration of Workers Compensation policies, including claim management in monopolistic states.
- Act as the primary point of contact with the surety broker, oversee monthly bond reporting, and coordinate annual meetings with surety and broker.
- Direct the claim management process from notification to dispute resolution; manage litigation and settlement strategies in collaboration with outside counsel and adjusters.
- Collaborate with the Safety Department on incident investigations, injury management, and transitional duty assignments.
- Work closely with Finance and Accounting to establish, monitor, and assess insurance claim reserves, and determine allocation of insurance costs to business entities.
- Develop and conduct training on insurance coverage, claims management, and risk mitigation for leaders and managers across the organization.
- Travel as needed to branch locations for executive meetings, mediations, arbitrations, hearings, and training.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 5-10 years of risk management experience in a relevant industry.
- Proficiency with ERP systems or similar business information systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to manage both strategic and tactical responsibilities effectively.

- Possesses a CPCU, CRIS, or other recognized professional designation (preferred).
- Has prior experience in the construction industry (preferred).
- Familiarity with captive insurance company operations (preferred).
