Homemade is seeking a dedicated and innovative Product Engineer to join its growing team. As a Product Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in building foundational infrastructure for a pioneering food technology platform. This platform aims to revolutionize the way families make food decisions, reduce waste, save money, and improve health outcomes. Homemade operates on a B2B2C model, partnering with government agencies, healthcare systems, employers, and sponsors to provide accessible, contract-based services without direct cost to end users.
As the first full-time engineer, you will work closely with the founder and a fractional CTO to transform ambitious product visions into robust, scalable software solutions. You will have the opportunity to establish core engineering practices, design systems from the ground up, and implement advanced features that serve a diverse user base, including hospital patients, city agencies, and everyday families. Your expertise will help ensure the platform is reliable, compliant, and able to scale with growing demand.
Homemade’s current focus is developing a mobile-first web experience that leverages SMS communication and advanced AI integrations to deliver personalized recipe guidance. This innovative approach requires a Product Engineer who excels in serverless infrastructure, mobile-first web development, and real-time messaging systems. You will also be responsible for ensuring that all technical solutions meet compliance standards, particularly in handling sensitive data for healthcare and government clients.

Product Engineer - Summary

- Establish technical foundations, including web app architecture, serverless backend, messaging solutions, and AI integrations.
- Contribute to a mission-driven company focused on improving food decisions, reducing waste, and supporting families and institutions.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and develop a mobile-first web application for recipe delivery and ingredient personalization, optimized for low-end devices and fast load times.
- Build and maintain SMS-based communication systems using platforms such as Twilio for real-time user engagement.
- Integrate AI solutions (Claude, GPT, or similar) for dynamic recipe modification, dietary constraint handling, and personalized user guidance.
- Implement and manage serverless infrastructure (AWS Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB or similar) to ensure scalability and security.
- Develop and support a lightweight partner dashboard for institutional clients in healthcare and government sectors.
- Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines, code review processes, and version control best practices using GitHub.
- Collaborate daily with the founder on product vision, technical direction, and feature prioritization.
- Work with the fractional CTO for architectural reviews and to ensure enterprise-grade performance and reliability.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare and government data standards, particularly in managing HIPAA-adjacent workflows.
- Participate in whiteboarding sessions, technical debates, and daily standups to align on product goals and deliverables.

Qualifications & Requirements
- 3-6 years of hands-on experience shipping production software end-to-end, with a focus on mobile-first web applications and serverless architecture.
- Proven expertise in developing serverless backend solutions, preferably using AWS Lambda and associated services.
- Experience building SMS/messaging integrations with Twilio or equivalent platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate and deploy AI/LLM solutions (Claude, GPT, or similar) in real-world products.
- Strong product intuition and user-outcome-oriented mindset.
- Familiarity with compliance standards for healthcare and government clients, particularly HIPAA-adjacent requirements.
- Ability to work onsite Monday through Thursday, with flexibility on Fridays.
- Experience as an early-stage employee (#1 to #5) and/or background in food, health, consumer, or gov tech is a plus.
- Knowledge of public sector or health system procurement processes desirable.
