Preconstruction Sales Manager – Mechanical Contractor Summary
The Preconstruction Sales Manager – Mechanical Contractor is responsible for leading business development and preconstruction efforts for a commercial mechanical contracting firm. This role requires deep technical expertise in HVAC and mechanical systems, along with the ability to communicate persuasively, manage estimates, and close complex commercial accounts. The position is full-time and based in San Diego, offering a collaborative work environment and opportunities for professional growth.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead business development by identifying, qualifying, and pursuing new commercial accounts while expanding existing client relationships.
- Manage the entire preconstruction and sales lifecycle for assigned projects, including document review, takeoffs, scope development, and subcontractor/vendor pricing coordination.
- Prepare and deliver persuasive proposals and technical presentations that articulate project scope, value engineering solutions, scheduling considerations, and risk allocation.
- Collaborate closely with estimating, engineering, project management, and field leadership to ensure constructability, cost accuracy, and seamless project handoff from bid to execution.
- Take ownership of proposal margin expectations, proactively identifying and quantifying risks while recommending contingency strategies to protect profitability.
- Maintain and update CRM systems such as Salesforce, track pipeline activity, and report on revenue forecasts and win/loss outcomes.
- Represent the organization at industry events, design meetings, and client functions, acting as a trusted technical advisor and fostering long-term client relationships.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical contracting preconstruction, estimating, or technical sales, preferably in commercial HVAC/plumbing/piping.
- Demonstrated ability to sell mechanical construction services or lead estimates for commercial projects, with a proven track record of closed contracts and pipeline management.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems (HVAC, hydronic, ductwork, piping, controls) and proficiency in reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications.
- Proficient with takeoff and estimating tools, construction software, Microsoft Excel, and CRM systems (Salesforce is strongly preferred).
- Exceptional negotiation, presentation, and client relationship skills, with a focus on protecting and improving gross margin.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel locally for client and field meetings.

- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Business, or a related field, or equivalent industry/trade experience.
- Experience working in an estimating department and exposure to field operations or service, providing insight on constructability.
- Relevant certifications or training, such as LEED, ASHRAE familiarity, OSHA 30, or continuing education in estimating and sales.
- Proven success in selling to general contractors, end-users, and design teams, particularly in commercial markets similar to San Diego.
