Preconstruction Estimating Manager - Summary
- Lead the estimating team for mechanical construction projects, ensuring accurate project estimates and proposals.
- Oversee, train, and mentor estimating staff, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with business development and project management teams to validate project scopes, pricing, and strategic opportunities.
- Support preconstruction departments and maintain strong relationships with general contractors, clients, and subcontractors.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to a team of estimators, including workload assignment, performance management, and skills development.
- Conduct regular staff meetings to review production goals, address scope changes, and forecast upcoming work.
- Engage with preconstruction departments at general contracting partners to identify and pursue new project opportunities.
- Evaluate potential projects for strategic alignment and margin objectives.
- Deliver persuasive presentations and participate in negotiations to support business development and project acquisition.
- Review and analyze project plans, specifications, P&IDs, and contracts to determine scope requirements and pricing impacts.
- Use advanced estimating software and computer-based takeoff systems to generate consistent and precise estimates.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to secure accurate pricing and ensure comprehensive scope coverage.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings, presenting scopes, budgets, and any unique project considerations.
- Assist project managers with budget preparation, change order pricing, and developing project forecasts and schedules.
- Monitor project progress, comparing actual production rates to bid assumptions, and support recovery planning when necessary.
- Assist with labor productivity tracking, production analysis, and claims preparation as required.

Qualifications & Requirements
- 5–10+ years of experience leading estimating teams and managing personnel in mechanical construction.
- 10+ years of cradle-to-grave estimating experience for mechanical construction projects.
- Expertise in estimating mechanical systems, including process piping, HVAC, sheet metal, or plumbing.
- Proven ability to support business development initiatives and foster client relationships.
- Proficiency with estimating software such as Autobid, Trimble, QuickPen, FastPIPE, or similar platforms.
- Advanced computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel proficiency required).
- Preferred: Field or craft experience in mechanical construction, experience with large-scale high-purity or process piping projects, particularly in semiconductor or biopharmaceutical environments.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
