Plumbing Estimator Job OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Plumbing Estimator to join our team on a full-time basis in San Diego, CA. As a Plumbing Estimator, you will play a critical role in the mechanical contracting industry, focusing on the preparation, development, and submission of accurate plumbing estimates for a variety of complex construction projects. This position is ideally suited for candidates with a strong background in mechanical construction estimating, especially those with proven expertise in large-scale commercial, industrial, or specialty facility projects.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee all phases of the estimating and bidding process for plumbing systems, including the review of bid documents and participation in pre-bid meetings.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs, review material and equipment requirements, and solicit pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Input data into spreadsheets and prepare comprehensive proposals to ensure bids are competitive and thorough.
- Utilize industry-standard estimating software such as QuoteExpress or similar on-screen platforms to generate accurate cost estimates.
- Collaborate with design professionals on design-assist and design-build projects, providing value engineering and budget-conscious recommendations throughout project development.
- Work closely with construction project teams and CAD detailing staff to ensure clarity and alignment between estimating and field operations.
- Demonstrate familiarity with safety requirements, worker’s compensation, insurance, and bonding as they pertain to the bidding process.
- Participate in both on-site and in-house estimating activities and maintain open lines of communication with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Handle technical data, documentation, and archiving with strong organizational skills.
- Comply with all company operating policies, procedures, plans, and programs as required.
- Proficient in computer applications including MS Word, MS Excel, Bluebeam, Lotus Notes, and mechanical estimating systems such as QuoteExpress.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with colleagues, clients, vendors, and suppliers at all levels.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform essential business mathematical functions required for accurate estimating.
- Ability to interpret various forms of instructions, including written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule-based directions.
- Experience in preparing detailed estimates from incomplete design documents is preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of mechanical construction experience is highly desirable, especially in the preparation of large and complex bid proposals.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively managing project details.
- Knowledge of plumbing systems for specialized facilities such as hotels, laboratories, power plants, manufacturing facilities, clean rooms, cGMP facilities, and process systems for pharmaceutical and microelectronics industries.
- Experience with building information modeling (BIM) and sustainable building solutions.
