Physician Assistant – Cardiothoracic Surgery (PA-C) Summary
- Integral member of the cardiovascular and thoracic surgical team, supporting all phases of perioperative care.
- Collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and allied health staff to provide comprehensive care.
- Engages in patient assessment, surgical assistance, inpatient management, and outpatient follow-up.
- Focuses on optimizing patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction through evidence-based practice.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-operative patient evaluations, including history and physical examinations, risk assessment, and surgical planning.
- Assist surgeons in the operating room during cardiac and thoracic procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair/replacement, and thoracic resections.
- Perform procedural tasks, including vein harvesting, chest tube placement, wound closure, and removal of temporary pacing wires under supervision as appropriate.
- Participate in post-operative management, including monitoring for complications, adjusting care plans, and coordinating with nursing staff.
- Order, interpret, and follow up on diagnostic tests, laboratory results, and imaging studies.
- Educate patients and families about surgical procedures, post-operative care, discharge instructions, and lifestyle modifications for optimal recovery.
- Document all aspects of patient care accurately in the electronic medical record system.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to case discussions and care planning.
- Adhere to all institutional policies, protocols, and regulatory requirements regarding patient care and safety.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) as a PA-C.
- Active and unrestricted Physician Assistant licensure as required by applicable state regulations.
- Previous clinical experience in cardiothoracic or cardiovascular surgery preferred; surgical or inpatient hospital experience strongly desired.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
- Strong clinical assessment, procedural, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and documentation standards.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team setting.
