The Pediatric Trauma Surgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP), including both Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Physician Assistant (PA) roles, is a critical member of the pediatric surgical care team. This position is designed to support pediatric trauma surgery patients by delivering high-quality care in a dynamic and collaborative hospital environment. The APP will work closely with a full pediatric surgery team to ensure optimal clinical outcomes for children experiencing trauma, contributing expertise in both inpatient and surgical settings. As a Pediatric Trauma Surgery APP, you will play an integral role in managing pediatric trauma cases, assisting in surgical procedures, and providing comprehensive care throughout the patient’s hospital stay. The advanced practice provider will participate in a rotating schedule of three twelve-hour shifts per week, with flexibility to accommodate personal and professional needs. Four hours of administrative time per week are included, providing a balanced approach to clinical and non-clinical responsibilities. There is no call required for this position, allowing for improved work-life integration.
The census typically ranges from seven to ten pediatric trauma patients at any given time, ensuring manageable patient loads and the ability to provide attentive, high-quality care. The support staff includes a full surgery team, fostering a collaborative and comprehensive clinical environment. Providers will be engaged in a wide range of pediatric trauma procedures, such as drain removal (including chest tubes and surgically placed drains), gastric tube replacement, dilation of gastrostomy tracts, repair of simple lacerations, anal dilations, rectal irrigations, and first-assist duties in the operating room as needed.
Applicants should possess an active Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license, with preference given to those holding a state license or a nursing compact license. The ideal candidate will be experienced in pediatric acute care and trauma surgery, comfortable working with Epic EMR, and able to adapt quickly to the demands of a busy trauma service. The credentialing process is efficient, typically completed within 30 to 60 days, ensuring a smooth transition into practice for qualified candidates.
