Nurse Practitioner – General Surgery, NP Summary
The Nurse Practitioner – General Surgery, NP is responsible for delivering advanced clinical care to surgical patients, collaborating with physicians and healthcare professionals, and ensuring continuity of care throughout the surgical process. This role includes patient assessment, diagnostic evaluation, treatment planning, and the management of both acute and chronic surgical conditions. The Nurse Practitioner – General Surgery, NP also plays a critical role in patient education, fostering clear communication and empowering patients and their families to make informed decisions about their health.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assess health status by obtaining detailed patient histories, conducting thorough physical examinations, and ordering or interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests for surgical patients.
- Utilize advanced clinical judgment to synthesize patient data, establish differential diagnoses, and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Initiate and manage pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions in collaboration with the surgical and multidisciplinary care teams.
- Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, post-operative care, follow-up plans, and health maintenance strategies.
- Document all aspects of patient care in accordance with hospital and clinic policies, ensuring accuracy and compliance with medical regulations.
- Participate actively in hospital and clinic quality improvement and quality assurance activities to enhance patient care standards.
- Efficiently utilize healthcare resources to meet departmental budget goals and support cost-effective care delivery.
- Contribute to professional development by engaging in lifelong learning, maintaining current certifications, and participating in relevant educational activities.
- Take part in provider and support staff meetings as required, fostering effective communication and teamwork within the surgical department.
- May participate in rotational call coverage as assigned to support continuous patient care.
- Comply with all organizational policies, including adherence to the Code of Conduct and reporting any compliance concerns promptly.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the healthcare organization.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from an accredited institution.
- Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensure in California.
- National Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner through ANCC or AANP.
- Possession of a valid California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing number.
- Current DEA provider number (Schedules II – V) and CURES registration.
- Valid NPI number and American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience in general surgery or a related specialty.
