The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN) role is pivotal in providing high-quality patient care within a medical-surgical unit, ensuring that each patient receives comprehensive and compassionate care. Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN) - Summary
- Provide direct patient care in a medical-surgical setting, ensuring safety, comfort, and well-being.
- Collaborate with physicians, charge nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement nursing care plans.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, procedures, and health management.
- Maintain accurate and thorough patient records, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Obtain and document comprehensive patient and family histories, including advanced medical directive information.
- Assess, observe, and record patient symptoms, reactions, and progress, and assist physicians during examinations and treatments.
- Administer medications and prescribed treatments according to established protocols and scope of nursing practice, including intravenous, subcutaneous, oral, transdermal, rectal, and intramuscular routes.
- Monitor and interpret patient data collected by LVNs and unlicensed personnel, escalating concerns to the appropriate medical staff as needed.
- Serve as a patient advocate, assessing patient and family knowledge, developing instructional plans, and documenting understanding and progress.
- Develop, implement, and manage individualized nursing care plans tailored to specific patient needs and conditions.
- Provide education and support to patients and families to promote convalescence, rehabilitation, and ongoing health maintenance.
- Communicate pertinent patient information to charge nurses, physicians, and the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care.
- Verify transcription of physician orders and administer blood products, demonstrating knowledge of drug actions and dosages.
- Perform a broad range of direct patient care procedures, including range of motion exercises, feeding, and clothing patients.
- Manage complex patient cases, including those that require advanced procedures, infection control, and life support equipment.
- Ensure adherence to protocols for tissue/skin bank and blood bank procedures.
- Plan and implement care in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare providers, ensuring seamless transitions and communication between units as needed.
- Provide comprehensive reports on patient status, surgical procedures, specialized care, and equipment needs during unit transfers or handoffs.
- Float within similar specialties as required to support patient care needs across the organization.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Associate's degree in nursing (ASN) from an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited college or university, or as otherwise recognized by relevant authorities.
- Minimum of one year of nursing experience in a clinical setting.
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in one of the 50 US states or territories.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Ability to successfully complete a NACI background check.
