The Medical Coder III (CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT) position is designed for experienced professionals who excel in institutional and professional coding, and who are adept at handling the complexity of outpatient specialty services, surgical encounters, emergency department, observation services, and inpatient records. As a subject matter expert, you will ensure adherence to the highest productivity and accuracy standards, while playing a key role in compliance and mentorship within the coding team.
Operating in a fully remote environment, the Medical Coder III (CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT) will utilize advanced electronic health record systems, such as the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS, to access and review patient information. Medical Coder III (CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT) - Summary
- Serve as an advanced medical coder responsible for accurate assignment of medical codes for complex healthcare services.
- Support the Defense Health Agency’s mission by ensuring accurate documentation and reimbursement.
- Mentor junior coders and contribute to maintaining a high standard of compliance and excellence in medical coding practices.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct advanced review of medical record documentation to identify and resolve inconsistencies, ambiguities, and discrepancies affecting coding accuracy, compliance, or reimbursement.
- Assign Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes (including complex modifiers and units of service), ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes for both institutional and inpatient services as applicable.
- Utilize the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS platform to access patient records securely and perform accurate coding remotely.
- Consistently meet or exceed advanced productivity standards while maintaining at least 97% coding accuracy.
- Offer mentorship, education, and informal guidance to Medical Coder I and II staff, assisting with quality reviews and audit responses as needed.
- Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, payer rules, and Department of Defense and Military Health System policies to ensure compliance and accurate coding practices.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Associate’s degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a biological science; or
- University certificate in Medical Coding; or
- Completion of a medical training program beyond apprentice level under professional supervision through the U.S. Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service.
- Minimum of 4 years of hands-on medical coding experience, with demonstrated expertise in institutional, outpatient specialty, emergency department, observation, surgical, and inpatient hospital services.
- Experience with DoD or Veterans Administration medical coding is preferred.
- Strongly prefer candidates with experience using MHS GENESIS or similar electronic health record systems.
- U.S. Citizenship is required due to the nature of the work and client requirements.

- Holds one or more of the following certifications: AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC), AHIMA Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P), AAPC Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), AAPC Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC), or NAMAS Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA).
- Possesses advanced or multiple coding certifications (strongly preferred).
- Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to resolve complex coding challenges.
- Shows a commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of medical coding.

- Position requires the ability to lift up to 20-25 lbs independently and to remain seated for extended periods in a home office environment.
