Medical Coder (CPC, RHIT, CCS) - Summary

Duties & Responsibilities
- Review and analyze clinical documentation to assign precise medical codes for diagnoses and procedures according to regulatory guidelines and industry standards
- Collaborate with healthcare providers and other professionals to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of coded data to support billing, reimbursement, and compliance processes
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all privacy regulations and ethical standards in handling patient information
- Participate in continuous education and training to remain current with updates in coding practices and industry requirements
- Contribute to quality assurance initiatives by conducting audits and assisting in the development of coding best practices
- Utilize specialized software and electronic health record (EHR) systems to complete coding tasks efficiently
- Support organizational efforts to meet performance goals and achieve operational excellence

Qualifications & Requirements
- Post-high school education through a university or technical program, with one of the following:
- Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or biological science
- University certificate in medical coding
- At least 30 semester hours of relevant university/college credit
- Completion of an AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course
- Successful completion of a qualifying military or maritime service medical training program
- Possession of one of the following professional coding certifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCS-P)
- AND one recognized institutional coding certification:
- Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- AND the following auditing certifications:
- Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA)
- Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA) from NAMAS
- U.S. Citizenship is required
