Medical Coder CPC, CCS, RHIT, RHIA - Summary
The Medical Coder (CPC, CCS, RHIT, RHIA) is responsible for assigning accurate diagnostic and procedural codes to inpatient facility and professional services records, supporting the Defense Health Agency's compliance requirements. This position engages with healthcare providers, clinical staff, and compliance specialists to ensure precise documentation and coding, promoting effective revenue cycle management and regulatory adherence.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assign diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient facility and professional services according to the latest ICD-CM, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines.
- Utilize MHS GENESIS® and other military health coding systems for daily coding tasks and remote access to patient records as directed.
- Review encounter and medical record documentation to resolve coding inconsistencies, ambiguities, or discrepancies, ensuring accurate code assignment.
- Assign Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, relevant modifiers, and quantities based on documented provider information.
- Ensure coding compliance by ethically researching and interpreting guidance, and seeking clarification through appropriate channels when necessary.
- Meet or exceed Defense Health Agency coding productivity and accuracy standards.
- Educate providers and clinical staff on documentation improvement to facilitate proper coding.
- Act as a resource for medical staff regarding coding questions, providing clear examples and references.
- Collaborate with coding auditors, trainers, and compliance specialists to provide education and feedback, supporting overall coding quality and compliance.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Four (4) years of medical coding and/or auditing experience in two or more medical, surgical, or ancillary specialties within the past ten years OR
- Minimum of two (2) years of medical coding or auditing if experience was in a military treatment facility (MTF).
- At least one (1) year of documented specialty performance required for qualifying experience.
- Completion of ONE of the following educational requirements:
- Associate's degree or higher in Health Information, Healthcare Administration, or Biological Science.
- University certificate in medical coding.
- At least 30 semester hours of relevant college coursework (anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, pharmacology).
- Successful completion of AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course for professional services or facility coding.
- Completion of a non-apprentice level training course for medical technicians or similar roles provided by the Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service.
- Possession of ONE of the following professional coding certifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Coding Specialist Physician (CCS-P)
- AND one of the following institutional coding certifications:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
- Minimum 80% passing score on a medical coding test.
