Medical Billing Specialist - Summary
- The Medical Billing Specialist (MBS) is responsible for the back-end management of accounts receivable for both hospital and physician billing accounts.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform second-tier insurance account follow-up on outstanding accounts receivable balances.
- Resolve denied, underpaid, and unresolved insurance claims efficiently and accurately.
- Address aged accounts and payer issues by conducting detailed account research and analysis.
- Review and verify the accuracy of UB-04 and/or HCFA 1500 claim forms.
- Investigate eligibility discrepancies, coding issues, payer denials, and reimbursement variances.
- Communicate professionally with insurance payers, clients, and internal teams to resolve account issues.
- Identify payer trends, workflow inefficiencies, and barriers to claim resolution.
- Submit corrected claims, rebills, secondary billing, and appeals when necessary.
- Document account activities and correspondence thoroughly and accurately in billing systems.
- Escalate payer errors appropriately for reprocessing and resolution.
- Work with both commercial and government payers to ensure compliance with all billing regulations.
- Maintain productivity and quality standards as set by the organization.

Qualifications & Requirements
- 1-2 years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle management or a related field is required.
- Direct experience with hospital and/or physician billing processes is essential.
- Strong knowledge of insurance denials, follow-up procedures, and billing forms (UB-04, HCFA 1500).
- Proficiency using billing and electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, Meditech, McKesson, Allscripts, or Soarian.
- Competency in Microsoft Office applications and other internet-based systems.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage multiple applications and systems simultaneously.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree is preferred.
