Mechanical Estimator – Industrial Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Estimator – Industrial to join our team on a full-time basis in Los Angeles, CA. This position plays a critical role in providing and coordinating detailed mechanical estimating services that enable the successful procurement of industrial and pipe fabrication projects. The right candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and a focus on profitability. As a Mechanical Estimator – Industrial, you will collaborate with General Contractors and other stakeholders to ensure our bids are competitive, thorough, and aligned with our business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Initiate and maintain regular communication with Pre-Construction Departments of targeted General Contractors to identify new project opportunities in the Los Angeles, CA area and beyond.
- Assess potential project opportunities to determine alignment with company business models, competitive advantages, and profitability goals.
- Review project plans, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), specifications, and contracts to identify impacts on scope, schedule, and cost prior to preparing estimates.
- Utilize computer-based take-off and estimating systems to develop accurate, reproducible results for mechanical and industrial projects.
- Support project sales efforts by developing scopes of supply, preparing presentations, participating in negotiations, and assisting in project closure activities.
- Assist in the preparation of budgets for initial project setup and any priced change orders, working closely with Project Managers.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings to present scopes of work, work plans, budgets, unique project requirements, and identify any critical limitations or risks.
- Monitor project progress to compare actual production rates with bid rates, ensuring adherence to project budgets and timelines.
- Support the preparation of project forecasts, claims, and schedules as needed, providing valuable insights for project management.
- Contribute to labor productivity tracking and help develop alternate plans to recover underperforming projects to meet budgeted objectives.
- Attend weekly staff meetings to identify scope deviations, monitor production, support forecasting, and foster team collaboration.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience estimating mechanical systems in industrial markets such as power plants, refineries, water/wastewater treatment facilities, or similar industries.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, and competency with computer-based estimating systems.
- Preferred: 10+ years of relevant experience in mechanical estimating within industrial sectors.
- Preferred: Field or craft experience and a strong understanding of piping systems and equipment installation.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk in an office environment.
- Occasionally lift up to 15 pounds as required.
- Visual acuity sufficient to interpret detailed construction drawings on both computer monitors and paper documents.
- Ability to traverse uneven surfaces and climb stairs at project sites to access temporary offices.
