Mechanical Estimator – Industrial Job Overview
The Mechanical Estimator – Industrial plays a critical role in supporting the successful procurement and execution of industrial and pipe fabrication projects. This full-time position, based in Los Angeles, CA, is responsible for providing comprehensive mechanical estimating services for a variety of industrial markets, including power plants, manufacturing facilities, refineries, and water or wastewater treatment plants. The Mechanical Estimator – Industrial ensures accurate and thorough project estimates, cultivates strong relationships with general contractors, and actively contributes to the profitability and competitiveness of the company’s industrial division.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain regular contact with the pre-construction departments of targeted general contractors in Los Angeles, CA, to identify and pursue new business opportunities suitable for the company’s business model and strategic objectives.
- Thoroughly review project plans, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), specifications, and contracts to identify project requirements and any potential impacts on project scope or cost.
- Utilize computer-based take-off and estimating systems to prepare detailed, reproducible, and accurate project estimates for industrial mechanical systems.
- Support the project acquisition process by assisting in the development of project scopes, participating in presentations, negotiating with stakeholders, and contributing to project closing efforts.
- Assist project managers with budget preparation for initial project setup as well as priced change orders during the course of project execution.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings by presenting estimates, scope of work, budgets, critical requirements, and any limitations relevant to the project’s success.
- Monitor project progress by comparing actual production rates to bid rates, and provide insights to enhance project performance and profitability.
- Contribute to the preparation of project forecasts, claims, schedules, and labor productivity tracking as required.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings to identify scope deviations, monitor production, and forecast future work requirements.
- Assist in developing alternative plans and solutions to recover projects when performance does not align with original budgets or expectations.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in estimating mechanical systems within industrial markets such as power plants, refineries, or water/wastewater treatment sectors.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, is essential for day-to-day estimating and reporting tasks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 10 or more years of experience in mechanical estimation for industrial projects.
- Field or craft experience in industrial construction environments.
- Advanced understanding of piping systems and equipment installation.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk while working on detailed estimates and project documentation.
- Capacity to lift up to 15 pounds as needed.
- Visual acuity to interpret detailed construction drawings and documents, both digitally and in print.
- Ability to traverse uneven surfaces on project sites and ascend stairs to access temporary site offices.
