Mechanical Estimator Job Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Estimator to join our dynamic Commercial Pre-Construction department on a full-time basis in Houston, TX. Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the entire bid recap process, including the preparation of proposal letters and completion of bid forms and breakouts for mechanical projects in Houston, TX.
- Attend bid review meetings to discuss and refine proposals prior to submission.
- Monitor addenda, scope changes, and breakouts to ensure timely and accurate incorporation into estimates.
- Communicate with internal teams regarding project specifications, scope, value engineering opportunities, and project timelines.
- Verify systems specifications summaries to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Lead take-off teams in project page turns to communicate expectations and requirements for precise and complete take-offs.
- Conduct quantity takeoffs for equipment and fixtures while reviewing project plans and specifications for a comprehensive understanding of scope.
- Identify and resolve any missing pricing for labor, scope, or materials.
- Review vendor and subcontractor scope letters, maintaining effective communication with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure all required pricing and breakouts are provided in a timely manner.
- Coordinate pre-construction activities between sales and estimating to maximize departmental productivity and achieve sales and marketing objectives in Houston, TX.
- Utilize knowledge of market conditions, customer needs, competition, and internal resources to meet current and projected workload requirements.
- Develop, monitor, and manage departmental processes and procedures to optimize productivity while minimizing acceptable risk.
- Work independently under general supervision, demonstrating strong initiative and leadership within the estimating department.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support departmental and company goals.
Qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience in mechanical contracting as an estimator or in a similar role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of piping, plumbing, and sheetmetal systems in commercial construction settings.
- Experience in evaluating system costs for various applications and building types.
- Ability to develop conceptual estimates for design-build projects and prepare budgets based on mechanical system narratives.
- Skilled in presenting and interviewing for construction projects.
- Extensive understanding of how corporate objectives impact estimating strategies and techniques for different types of construction contracts.
- Proficient in interpreting contractual documents, plans, and specifications.
- Educational background or work experience in basic mechanical systems and engineering concepts.
- Competency with computerized estimating systems, such as ESTMEP for PVF take-offs and BlueBeam for drawing analysis.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, for data analysis and reporting.
