Mechanical Estimator Job Overview
The Mechanical Estimator plays a critical role in the Commercial Pre-Construction department, reporting directly to the Chief Estimator and working closely with the Operations Team and estimating support staff. This full-time position in Houston, TX, is responsible for managing the entire estimating process for mechanical contracting projects, including bid preparation, project scope analysis, takeoffs, and vendor coordination. As a Mechanical Estimator, you will contribute to the company's reputation for excellence by ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance in all project bids.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the bid recap process from inception to completion, including drafting proposal letters and completing bid forms and breakouts for mechanical projects.
- Attend bid review meetings to ensure proposals meet project requirements and deadlines.
- Monitor and incorporate all addenda, scope changes, and breakouts into estimates on a timely basis.
- Communicate with internal teams regarding project specifications, scope, value engineering opportunities, timelines, and related bid matters.
- Verify system specification summaries to ensure accuracy in all estimates.
- Lead take-off teams during project page turns to clarify expectations, requirements, and ensure detailed take-offs.
- Conduct quantity takeoffs for equipment, fixtures, and review project plans/specifications to develop a thorough understanding of project scope.
- Identify missing pricing or details related to labor, scope, and materials and resolve discrepancies.
- Review vendor and subcontractor scope letters, ensuring accuracy and completeness, while fostering positive relations with suppliers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Coordinate pre-construction activities between sales and estimating to optimize resources and achieve departmental goals.
- Utilize market knowledge, customer needs, and competition analysis to inform estimating strategies and meet workload demands.
- Develop and manage departmental processes to maximize productivity and minimize risk.
- Work under broad supervision, exercising independent judgment and initiative in daily tasks.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support departmental objectives.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical contracting as an estimator or in a similar role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of piping, plumbing, and sheet metal systems.
- Experience with system cost estimation for various applications and building types.
- Ability to produce conceptual estimates for design-build projects and budgets based on mechanical narratives.
- Experience participating in construction project interviews and presentations.
- Strong understanding of how corporate objectives influence estimating strategies and contract types.
- Ability to interpret contractual documents, project plans, and specifications accurately.
- Relevant coursework or experience in basic mechanical systems and engineering concepts.
- Proficiency with computerized estimating systems, such as ESTMEP for PVF take-offs and BlueBeam for drawing analysis.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, for estimate preparation and analysis.
