Labor and Delivery RN (Registered Nurse) - Summary
The Labor and Delivery RN (Registered Nurse) provides hands-on care and patient advocacy for women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. This includes monitoring vital signs, administering medications, assisting with pain management, and supporting obstetricians and other healthcare professionals in the Labor and Delivery unit. The role may require flexibility in shift scheduling, including the ability to work both day and night rotations as well as weekends and holidays, to meet the needs of the patients and the healthcare facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Monitor maternal and fetal well-being throughout labor and delivery, utilizing advanced medical equipment and clinical judgment.
- Provide direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for laboring mothers and newborns.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed, including IV therapy, pain management techniques, and emergency interventions when necessary.
- Assist physicians, midwives, and surgical teams during labor, delivery, cesarean sections, and other obstetric procedures.
- Educate patients and their families on the labor process, newborn care, and postpartum recovery, ensuring understanding and comfort.
- Document patient care accurately and promptly in the electronic medical record system, maintaining strict adherence to facility protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and families during labor, delivery, and recovery.
- Float to the Operating Room as needed to assist with obstetric and surgical procedures, demonstrating adaptability and strong teamwork skills.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain up-to-date certifications relevant to Labor and Delivery nursing.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Active and unrestricted RN license specific to the state, such as California RN license for positions within the state.
- Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and AWHONN Fetal Monitoring.
- Minimum two years of direct Labor and Delivery experience in a hospital or clinical setting.
- At least one year of travel RN experience preferred for contract roles.
- Willingness to float to the Operating Room or other units as needed, per facility requirements.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, nights, and holidays based on operational needs.
