Degree/Education: Be a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) approved school of medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved school of osteopathic medicine, or a medical or osteopathy school acceptable to the Surgeon General.
Graduate from an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) at the time the degree was obtained (e.g. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
Internship/Residency: Successful completion of an internship and residency program in Diagnostic Radiology and fellowship in Interventional Radiology approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Committee on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association. Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting (i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training). For purposes of this requirement, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
- An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics- gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training an appropriate accrediting body.
- A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
- A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by an appropriate accrediting body.
- Licensure/Registration: Shall have and maintain a valid, unrestrictive license to practice medicine within one of the 50 states of the Unites States and/or District of Columbia. Shall meet all certification requirements to perform as an Interventional Radiologist Physician in accordance with requirements of the PWS. Including a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration Certificate and must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Shall be board certified in Radiology and Interventional Radiology by the American Board of Radiologists.
- Possess a minimum of two years post fellowship experience in interventional radiology within the last three years.
- HCP(s) shall be able to meet credentials approval by the MTF Credentialing Committee and be granted privileges by the MTF Commander.
- Have and maintain current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Such certification must be from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Duties
- Performs a full range of interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF. Works as both interventional radiologist and diagnostic radiologist within the MTF.
- Performs or assists in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities. Educates, assists, and informs staff members of the interventional radiology clinic as applicable.
- Examines, diagnoses, treats, or prescribes courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
- Contacts and confers with referring physicians to provide results of abnormal studies and tests. Utilizes specialty-unique imaging technology in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with complex problems using special procedures such as Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Ultrasound (US).
- Oversees radiographic examinations, ensuring the correct radiographic procedures are conducted. Evaluates and interprets radiographs within the Department of Radiology in accordance with established principles, practices and ethics of both the medical profession and the American College of Radiology. Determines if cases should be referred to other specialists for review.
- Performs fluoroscopic and special radiographic procedures to include but not limited to plain film radiography including fluoroscopy, US, MRI, Interventional, IVP's, Angiography, CT, and Pediatric Radiology.
- Performs medium and high risk invasive surgical procedures for vascular and interventional radiology.
- Admits patients to the hospital as appropriate. Provides inpatient follow up to include chart review, progress notes and discharge as needed.
- Orders diagnostic tests as applicable as well as requests consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
- Full Technical proficiency in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Such direction and interaction will adhere to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols.
- Responds to Emergency Consultations for Interventional Radiology within one (1) hour
- Responds to Routine Consultations for Interventional Radiology with 24 hours
- Per the American College of Surgeons level II trauma center IR response for hemorrhage control requirements; maintain the IR lab capability and response so that an endovascular or interventional radiology procedure for hemorrhage control can begin within 60 minutes of request. Maintain a report of time interval between request and arterial puncture.
- Provides emergency coverage, on an on-call basis, for daytime, nighttime, weekend, and Federal holidays as agreed upon by radiology and surgical services to cover level II trauma center requirements for up to 26 weeks per year. The HCW shall be available by contact pager/cell phone during the on-call period .
