The HVAC Estimator plays a critical role in supporting the successful execution of HVAC and building automation projects by delivering accurate, comprehensive cost estimates and supporting the bid process from start to finish. As an HVAC Estimator, you will work extensively with computer estimating systems and specialized software to evaluate plan/spec and design/build HVAC projects. Your role ensures that all projects are competitively priced, thoroughly documented, and aligned with both client requirements and organizational standards. Key responsibilities of the HVAC Estimator include maintaining detailed estimating logs and unit costs for all assigned projects. You will be responsible for developing and sustaining strong vendor relationships that are essential for obtaining competitive pricing and ensuring project success. The HVAC Estimator will regularly conduct site surveys and participate in pre-bid walkthroughs to gain an in-depth understanding of project requirements and site conditions. Close collaboration with both sales and project management teams is integral to this role, as it ensures that projects are executed on time, within budget, and according to all plans and specifications.
In addition to technical estimating duties, the HVAC Estimator is expected to read and interpret blueprints and various construction documentation accurately. A thorough understanding of different types of HVAC systems and their key components is essential for creating reliable and competitive estimates. You will also coordinate with related trades to ensure all aspects of project estimates are comprehensive and accurate. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required to interface with internal teams, vendors, and clients, ensuring that all estimating activities are clearly documented and understood.
To succeed as an HVAC Estimator, candidates should possess an associate's degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Previous experience—ideally 0-2 years—in HVAC estimating is strongly recommended, and a proven track record in the industry is advantageous. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and general computer skills are required to efficiently navigate estimating tools and maintain accurate project records. A working knowledge of construction trades and the ability to collaborate across disciplines further supports success in this fast-paced environment.
