The role of a Gastroenterologist (MD/DO) is a critical, patient-centered position responsible for providing comprehensive inpatient care in a hospital setting. This opportunity, located in Northern New Jersey, is available as a full-time locum tenens contract. As a Gastroenterologist (MD/DO), you will join a well-established hospital team, delivering specialized gastrointestinal (GI) services to a diverse patient population. With a flexible schedule and robust clinical support, this position is ideal for experienced physicians who are board-certified in gastroenterology and passionate about advancing digestive health.

As a Gastroenterologist (MD/DO), you will be the primary GI consultant, collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes hospitalists and intensivists. The position is structured as an inpatient-only role, allowing you to focus exclusively on acute, consultative, and procedural care. Utilizing Epic EMR, you will manage a daily census of 5–10 patients, ensuring continuity and quality of care throughout your assignment. The solo provider model is supported by full hospital resources, so you are empowered to practice at the top of your license while benefiting from an organized and supportive clinical environment.

This contract begins in January 2026 and extends for six months, offering consistent scheduling and flexible block options. The typical workweek is Monday through Friday, featuring 8-hour shifts with emergency on-call responsibilities. You will provide coverage for two weeks per month, with each rotation encompassing seven consecutive days. This approach allows for work-life balance and professional flexibility, making it attractive to physicians seeking meaningful assignments without year-round commitment.

The procedural scope for the Gastroenterologist (MD/DO) includes a broad array of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. You will perform advanced endoscopic procedures such as ERCP, EGD, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy, as well as esophageal dilation, stent placement, PEG placement, paracentesis, and tumor ablation. In addition, you will manage complex GI conditions, including gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatitis, and peptic ulcer disease. The position requires comfort with both routine and urgent inpatient consults, matching the dynamic pace and acuity of a busy hospital environment.

To qualify for this Gastroenterologist (MD/DO) opportunity, candidates must be board-certified in gastroenterology and hold an active medical license in New Jersey. ACLS certification is mandatory, and previous experience with inpatient consults and GI procedures is strongly preferred. The hospital provides comprehensive onboarding and orientation, ensuring a smooth transition into the clinical team. The assignment comes with a competitive locum tenens rate, as well as paid travel, lodging, and malpractice coverage—ensuring that you can focus on delivering exceptional patient care without administrative distraction.
