Flight Surgeon (MD/DO) - Summary
- Deliver primary and preventive clinical care to active-duty personnel and their families as a Flight Surgeon (MD/DO).
- Perform specialized aeromedical evaluations and medical readiness assessments.
- Engage in operational and administrative responsibilities within a multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in quality improvement, safety reviews, and readiness exercises to drive continuous improvement in healthcare delivery.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assess and treat patients by developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans, ordering and interpreting appropriate tests, and making evidence-based clinical decisions.
- Implement treatment protocols, coordinate specialist referrals, and provide comprehensive case management.
- Deliver primary and preventive care, responding to patient inquiries and collaborating with clinic staff as needed.
- Perform medical procedures including Basic Life Support, airway management, cardioversion, minor surgical interventions, wound care, splinting, fracture/dislocation reduction, catheterization, medication administration, cryotherapy, foreign body removal, and venipuncture with laboratory interpretation.
- Conduct operational evaluations such as Preventive Health Assessments, initial certification exams for flyers and special duty personnel, adaptability assessments, and PRP/PSP determinations.
- Make aeromedical dispositions, including waivers and duty status determinations in accordance with established standards and regulations.
- Apply Department of the Air Force and military medical/fitness standards to all relevant patient populations.
- Complete deployment health assessments and support occupational health initiatives.
- Maintain comprehensive medical records and reports in compliance with Air Force Instructions (AFIs), Defense Health Agency (DHA) guidelines, and Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) protocols.
- Serve as a clinical advisor and liaison between flying squadrons and medical services, supporting occupational medicine programs and various committees.
- Participate actively in mass casualty and disease containment exercises to ensure preparedness for emergency situations.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school recognized by appropriate accrediting bodies.
- Current board certification in Aerospace Medicine is highly preferred; alternatively, board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine, or Preventive Medicine with three years of U.S. military Flight Surgeon experience is required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS/ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are recommended but not required.
- Demonstrated experience of at least 160 hours of direct patient care in the past year.
- Minimum of three years as a privileged flight surgeon at a U.S. military installation within the last decade.
- Familiarity with military medical standards, operational evaluations, and aeromedical disposition processes.
- US Citizenship and an active NACI clearance are required.
