Fleet Safety Manager Job Overview
The Fleet Safety Manager is a pivotal position responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety programs within regional trucking operations. Reporting to executive leadership, the Fleet Safety Manager will ensure the highest standards of transportation safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management across the company’s fleet of over 100 trucks. This full-time role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in transportation safety management and a passion for fostering a proactive safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures to address and mitigate operational risks within the fleet and trucking operations.
- Conduct ongoing safety training and coaching for drivers, operations staff, and management, ensuring all team members are compliant with FMCSA, OSHA, and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
- Investigate accidents and incidents, perform thorough root cause analyses, and establish corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Lead and manage regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to maintain regulatory compliance and operational safety standards.
- Provide hands-on instruction to drivers regarding vehicle inspections, proper load securement, and safe maneuvering techniques in close quarters.
- Oversee driver qualification files, monitor hours of service records, and ensure strict adherence to DOT drug and alcohol policies.
- Collaborate with maintenance vendors to verify that all vehicles meet or exceed required safety and maintenance standards.
- Liaise with insurance carriers, facilitating claims and ensuring all transportation and workplace safety requirements are met.
- Lead weekly safety incident reviews, conduct monthly safety meetings, and use key performance metrics to monitor and continuously improve safety outcomes.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience in the transportation industry, specifically within fleet or trucking operations.
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Safety Management, or a related field is required.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred but not required for consideration.
- Demonstrated knowledge of FMCSA, OSHA, and transportation safety regulations.
- Excellent communication, coaching, and organizational skills, with the ability to effectively train and lead teams.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
- Proficiency in office productivity software and standard industry safety management software.
