Estimating Manager - Summary
The Estimating Manager is responsible for leading the estimating function for mechanical construction projects, with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and competitive pricing. This role oversees a team of estimators, guides the proposal development process, and ensures all estimates meet company standards and client expectations. The position requires collaboration with preconstruction, project management, and business development teams to drive success from bid through project execution.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Estimating Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead, supervise, and mentor the estimating team, including assigning workloads, setting priorities, and managing performance.
- Train and develop estimating staff to ensure a high level of expertise and continuous professional growth.
- Facilitate weekly staff meetings to review production, address scope changes, and plan upcoming work.
- Preconstruction & Business Development Support:
- Maintain active communication with preconstruction departments and targeted general contractors to identify and pursue new opportunities.
- Evaluate potential projects to ensure alignment with company strategy and margin targets.
- Assist in proposal presentations, scope development, negotiations, and closing activities for new projects.
- Project Estimating:
- Review project plans, P&IDs, specifications, and contracts to determine scope requirements and pricing impacts.
- Utilize computer-based takeoff and estimating software to prepare detailed and accurate estimates.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors for pricing and scope verification.
- Project Coordination:
- Participate in project kickoff meetings to present scope, budgets, and unique project requirements.
- Support Project Managers in budget preparation and change order pricing.
- Assist with preparation of project forecasts, schedules, and claims as needed.
- Performance Monitoring:
- Monitor project progress to compare actual production rates with bid assumptions.
- Assist in tracking labor productivity and analyzing production data.
- Support the development of recovery plans when projects deviate from budget expectations.

Qualifications & Requirements
- 5–10+ years of experience leading estimating teams in mechanical construction.
- 10+ years of cradle-to-grave estimating experience for mechanical construction projects.
- Expertise in estimating process piping, HVAC, sheet metal, or plumbing systems.
- Experience supporting business development efforts and building client relationships.
- Proficiency with estimating software such as Autobid, Trimble, QuickPen, FastPIPE, or similar platforms.
- Advanced computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office tools such as Excel.
- Preferred: Field or craft experience in mechanical construction, experience with high-purity or process piping projects (especially in semiconductor or biopharmaceutical environments), and a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
