Emergency Veterinarian (DVM, VMD) – Buffalo Grove, IL – Full-timeWe are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Emergency Veterinarian (DVM, VMD) to join our team in Buffalo Grove, IL. As an Emergency Veterinarian, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality, comprehensive emergency care for companion animals in a supportive, collaborative environment. This full-time position offers an opportunity to work alongside a team of experienced doctors and veterinary professionals committed to delivering outstanding emergency veterinary services to the Greater Chicago Area.
Responsibilities- Provide emergency medical care for companion animals using a problem-based approach to develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Perform comprehensive physical examinations, obtain patient histories, and gather vital information including presenting complaints and signalment.
- Utilize diagnostic tools such as ultrasounds, x-rays, bloodwork, and biopsies to accurately assess patient conditions.
- Develop and implement individualized diagnostic and treatment plans for emergency and critical cases.
- Perform minor and major emergency surgeries as required for patient care.
- Communicate diagnosis, treatment options, and care plans clearly and compassionately with clients in person and over the phone.
- Prepare and present treatment estimates and explain the value of recommended tests and procedures to clients.
- Educate clients on preventative care, aftercare, and medication protocols, ensuring they are informed about their pet’s ongoing needs.
- Prescribe medications and follow all required drug protocols in accordance with best practices and legal requirements.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely medical records in electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Participate in triage, manage emergency cases promptly, and answer medical questions from clients as needed.
- Work collaboratively with a team of 3-4 doctors per shift and support staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), or equivalent degree is required.
- One year of experience in emergency or critical care is preferred, but not required.
- Experience with exotic animals is preferred; willingness to treat exotics is required.
- Basic computer proficiency necessary for practice management, electronic medical records, and collaboration software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and empathetically with clients and colleagues.
- Ability to perform minor and major surgical procedures related to emergency care, or willingness to learn such procedures.
- Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating or as-needed basis to meet hospital demands.
