The Director of Nursing (DON) plays a pivotal leadership role in ensuring the highest standards of nursing and clinical support services across all care sites and clinical departments. As a key member of the healthcare management team, the Director of Nursing (DON) is accountable for overseeing nursing operations, optimizing patient care delivery, and upholding regulatory compliance. The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the direct supervision of nursing and clinical support staff, collaborating closely with site leadership, Human Resources, and clinical supervisors. This role emphasizes the development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of competency testing and training programs for all nursing personnel. The Director of Nursing (DON) is instrumental in the recruitment, selection, and retention of highly qualified staff, ensuring that all team members are equipped to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care.
In this leadership capacity, the Director of Nursing (DON) reviews and revises clinical policies and procedures, oversees the creation and execution of training programs, and ensures adherence to regulatory standards, such as those set by HRSA and the Department of Public Health. The DON maintains preparedness for site visits, audits, and compliance reviews, providing expert guidance on state scope of practice regulations to ensure that all staff perform at the top of their licensure and training.
The Director of Nursing (DON) is also responsible for developing nurse visit templates and clinical protocols, working in conjunction with department leaders to create standing orders and ensure best practices in every aspect of patient care. This role supervises the Manager of Infection Control and Staff Safety, directing infection control activities and ensuring all clinical departments meet standards for safety and hygiene.
To support ongoing excellence, the Director of Nursing (DON) makes certain that all nursing staff participate in continuing education and are provided with opportunities for in-service training and professional development. The DON leads and participates in organizational quality improvement initiatives, focusing on clinical workflows, documentation, and patient outcomes. Participation in local and state professional organizations is encouraged, enhancing both visibility and performance of the organization.
Other key responsibilities include providing direct patient care when appropriate, ensuring the proper functioning and ordering of clinical equipment and supplies, and leading employee infection control and safety initiatives. The Director of Nursing (DON) is expected to perform other duties as required to support the organization's mission of delivering exceptional patient care.
