The Design Engineer – HVAC Controls plays a pivotal role in delivering engineered drawings and solutions for advanced HVAC control systems. This position is focused on transforming project requirements into detailed control system schematics and engineered drawings, primarily using AutoCAD and related drafting software. As a Design Engineer – HVAC Controls, you will work closely with project managers, engineers, and technical teams to ensure each design aligns with project specifications, industry standards, and client expectations. This role is essential for producing accurate, reliable, and efficient designs that support building automation, energy efficiency, and high-performing mechanical systems.
Professionals in this role are expected to demonstrate expertise in HVAC controls design, including the ability to size control valves, dampers, and air flow stations. Familiarity with Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems such as Schneider Electric and Tridium is highly valued, as is the capacity to write and interpret sequences of operation for HVAC systems. The Design Engineer – HVAC Controls will collaborate across departments to assemble submittals, operation and maintenance manuals, and project documentation, ensuring the smooth transition from design to implementation.
In addition, mentoring junior team members is an important function, supporting their technical growth and fostering a collaborative team environment. Design Engineer – HVAC Controls Summary
- Responsible for creating engineered drawings and schematics for HVAC control systems.
- Collaborates with project teams to review specifications and contract drawings.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop detailed drawings for HVAC control systems, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
- Review project specifications and contract documents to guide design work.
- Size and select control valves, dampers, and air flow stations for system optimization.
- Design and document control system layouts, including DDC systems such as Schneider Electric and Tridium.
- Prepare and assemble submittal packages and operation & maintenance manuals for project deliverables.
- Write, interpret, and implement sequences of operation for various HVAC control applications.
- Draft control drawings using software such as AutoCAD or Visio to industry standards.
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing technical knowledge and supporting their professional development.
- Maintain organized project documentation and ensure timely delivery of design packages.
- Work in collaboration with cross-functional project teams, including engineers, project managers, and clients.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related STEM field with 3–5 years of relevant experience.
- Minimum of 4 years' experience in controls design engineering, or 8 years as a controls technician.
- Strong understanding of electrical circuits, HVAC systems, sensors, signal types, and controls principles.
- Experience with drafting control drawings using AutoCAD, Visio, or equivalent tools.
- Advanced computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Ability to manage a high volume of work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with control sequences, including ASHRAE Guideline 36P.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field (preferred but not required).
- 2–4 years of additional relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience designing control systems with Schneider Electric EcoStruxure and SpaceLogic platforms is a plus.
- Working knowledge of security, surveillance, access control, and fire alarm systems is advantageous.
- Demonstrated ability to guide and mentor junior team members.
