The role of Dental Director (DDS/DMD) is a senior clinical leadership position responsible for overseeing all aspects of dental services and oral health programs within a healthcare organization. As the clinical leader for dental operations, the Dental Director (DDS/DMD) provides strategic direction, clinical oversight, and ensures that high-quality, patient-centered dental care is delivered in compliance with organizational goals and regulatory requirements. The Dental Director (DDS/DMD) leads a team of dental professionals and collaborates with cross-functional leaders to advance the mission and vision of the organization. Dental Director (DDS/DMD) - Summary
- Serves as the clinical and operational leader for all dental and oral health services, ensuring the delivery of comprehensive care.
- Provides oversight for primary, secondary, and preventive dental care in alignment with the organization's mission and regulatory standards.
- Leads quality improvement initiatives, clinical compliance, and professional development for dental staff.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide clinical guidance and support to staff dentists and dental hygienists, ensuring treatment plans meet best practice standards.
- Conduct regular chart audits and offer feedback to maintain accurate documentation and high-quality care.
- Lead dental provider meetings and participate in regional and state dental association activities to stay current with industry trends.
- Collaborate closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Director of Dental Operations, and other executive leaders to address oral health issues, monitor clinical productivity, and achieve financial objectives.
- Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of clinical staff, fostering a culture of excellence and teamwork.
- Oversee the development and management of the annual budget for the dental department, including setting productivity targets.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, infection control, and all relevant clinical protocols and regulations.
- Personally provide dental care to patients, participate in outreach, and deliver health education to promote preventative oral health.
- Lead and implement quality improvement initiatives, monitor clinical outcomes, and address patient satisfaction.
- Ensure the management and direction of mobile dental units and ancillary clinical services are effective and within budget.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with external dental providers, hospitals, clinics, regulatory bodies, and third-party insurance resources.
- Provide leadership, supervision, and performance reviews for all dental staff, ensuring clear expectations and professional development.
- Maintain and update all patient records in accordance with clinical guidelines, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Advise and counsel clinical personnel on care delivery and patient grievances to ensure continuous quality improvement and risk management.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Active and unrestricted license to practice dentistry (DDS or DMD) in the relevant state.
- Minimum of 10 years clinical experience in dentistry, with at least several years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
- Advanced degree in business, public health, healthcare administration, or related field preferred.
- Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to direct and develop high-performing teams.
- Familiarity with regulations and quality standards including JCAHO, CMS, OSHA, CDC, ADA, and relevant state and federal guidelines.
- Knowledge of credentialing, delineation of privileges, and peer review processes for dental staff.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and dental practice management software (Athena expertise preferred).
