Controls Engineer (PLC/DCS/SCADA) - SummaryThe Controls Engineer (PLC/DCS/SCADA) is responsible for designing and implementing automation systems for central utility and balance-of-plant applications. The role demands expertise in translating process engineering requirements into functional automation strategies, developing detailed PLC, DCS, and HMI solutions, and ensuring successful deployment and operational support of these systems. The Controls Engineer (PLC/DCS/SCADA) will play a key role in the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Site Acceptance Test (SAT), and ongoing commissioning and troubleshooting of control systems in industrial environments.
Duties & Responsibilities- Develop detailed functional specifications, including Sequence of Operations (SOO) and Bills of Materials (BOMs), to guide system design and implementation.
- Support electrical engineering teams in creating comprehensive project drawing packages for automation and control systems.
- Design, program, test, and deploy PLC, DCS, and HMI control systems tailored to central utility applications such as boilers, chillers, water treatment systems, and balance-of-plant infrastructure.
- Implement automation solutions for process equipment, including burner management systems and distributed energy controls.
- Develop and execute comprehensive FAT and SAT plans to validate system performance prior to and after installation.
- Support all commissioning activities, including loop checks, startup procedures, and system validation to ensure operational readiness.
- Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues during both development and live operational phases to maintain optimal system performance.
- Deliver training sessions to customers, ensuring thorough understanding of system operation and functionality.
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary engineering teams, including electrical, mechanical, and process engineers, to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Ensure all control system designs meet stringent performance, safety, and operational standards as required by project specifications.
- Support the integration of industrial communication protocols and multi-system interfaces, enabling seamless data exchange and control across platforms.
- Participate in field deployments and ensure successful system handover and documentation for operations teams.

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Three to six years of experience in controls engineering or industrial automation, with demonstrated expertise in central utility systems.
- Proficiency with central utility systems such as boilers, chillers, burner management systems, district energy, combined heat and power (CHP), and water treatment systems.
- Hands-on experience with PLC/DCS/SCADA platforms (e.g., Rockwell Automation, AVEVA, Ignition, Emerson DeltaV).
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols including Modbus, Ethernet/IP, DNP3, OPC, BACnet, and Profinet.
- Experience supporting FAT/SAT testing, commissioning, and field startup activities in industrial settings.
- Strong troubleshooting, systems integration, and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% to support project needs.
- Detail-oriented engineering professional with robust knowledge of automation technologies and industrial utility systems.
