The Construction Superintendent plays a pivotal role in managing and overseeing the daily field operations of retail, commercial, or institutional construction projects. This full-time position in San Diego, CA, is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the construction process align with contract specifications, company standards, and industry best practices. The Construction Superintendent is accountable for producing high-quality results, maintaining rigorous safety protocols, and creating an efficient, clean, and safe job site environment. As the forward-facing representative of the company on-site, the Construction Superintendent fosters a positive workplace culture, encourages effective communication, and resolves conflicts constructively.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily field activities to ensure adherence to project schedules and milestone dates, providing continuous oversight of all on-site operations.
- Develop and maintain short-interval, look-ahead project schedules and proactively address any issues that could impact project progress.
- Implement and oversee site safety plans, cultivating a culture that prioritizes safety, health, and cleanliness throughout the construction process.
- Coordinate and supervise all construction work to ensure it is completed according to contract documents and industry standards.
- Establish and maintain dimensional controls for the project, utilizing third-party survey and layout personnel as necessary.
- Ensure all work is executed in a professional manner, meeting quality standards such as plumb, level, and straight installation.
- Obtain required inspections and document all quality aspects of the physical work performed.
- Ensure compliance with all contractual terms, legal requirements, and community regulations affecting the project.
- Administer client-specific programs, such as site rules, safety, and security protocols.
- Participate in pre-construction, progress, and other project meetings to maintain alignment with project goals.
- Oversee self-performed activities to ensure budget compliance and monitor changes in project scope to prevent rework.
- Administer contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and other agreements, ensuring all terms and conditions are met.
- Manage the punch list and closeout process to ensure timely project completion.
- Maintain daily paperwork, including timecards, field reports, schedule updates, and correspondence.
- Interact cordially with supporting work groups such as clients, vendors, and security teams.
- Assist in preparing project proposals, reviewing estimates, and participating in interviews as needed.
- Engage in marketing activities to support the acquisition of new projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree in Construction Management or a similar field, or Journeyman status in a building trade from an accredited organization, with demonstrated progressive supervisory experience in construction.
- Comprehensive understanding of construction means and methods for commercial and institutional buildings, including site work.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets, email, scheduling, Microsoft Office, and construction industry software.
- Current safety credentials, including OSHA 30, First Aid, and CPR certifications.
