Construction Superintendent – Full-time – Los Angeles, CA
The Construction Superintendent plays a critical role in overseeing and managing all field operations on assigned projects, ensuring timely, efficient, and high-quality completion of construction work. As an essential member of the project management team, the Construction Superintendent is responsible for providing direct on-site supervision to Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, and other field personnel. This full-time position is based in Los Angeles, CA, offering opportunities to work on dynamic projects in a vibrant construction market.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct daily on-site supervision of the field labor force, including Superintendents, Foremen, subcontractors, and construction personnel to ensure safety, productivity, and adherence to project specifications.
- Collaborate with the Senior Project Manager to oversee total construction efforts in alignment with project design, budget, quality standards, and schedule.
- Provide technical guidance and interpretation of construction drawings, recommending construction methods, equipment, and assisting with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems as needed.
- Conduct regular inspections of contractor and subcontractor operations to confirm compliance with contract requirements and safety regulations.
- Review and approve payment applications from trade contractors in coordination with the Project Manager.
- Foster and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external clients, including owners, architects, engineers, and project partners.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive site logistics plans in collaboration with project leadership.
- Implement and monitor quality assurance and control practices, including conducting quality inspections and coordinating site testing and inspection activities.
- Track and manage project costs, including labor and material expenses, to ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines.
- Promote and enforce the safety and health management program, demonstrating a personal commitment to creating an injury-free environment and mentoring others in safety best practices.
- Prepare and manage detailed short-term schedules, ensuring all project milestones are achieved on or ahead of schedule.
- Document project progress through daily superintendent reports, capturing weather, field conditions, manpower, progress, and any incidents or quality issues.
- Lead subcontractor meetings and actively participate in overall project meetings to coordinate construction activities.
- Support the professional development of field Superintendents and Engineers through training and education initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field is preferred.
- OSHA Certification is required, along with current First Aid/CPR certification.
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in the construction industry, demonstrating progressively responsible leadership roles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with project management software.
- Comprehensive understanding of construction industry practices, including the ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective math and accounting abilities.
- Demonstrated management capabilities, including decision-making, problem-solving, and the ability to delegate tasks appropriately.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with a proven ability to coordinate multiple priorities.
- Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in all aspects of work.
- Proven track record of functioning effectively as part of a team and exhibiting strong leadership qualities.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The Construction Superintendent must be capable of traversing active construction sites, climbing ladders and temporary stairs, and conducting visual inspections of ongoing work. Regular jobsite walks are required to ensure project completion and to identify and address safety concerns. While performing the duties of this full-time role in Los Angeles, CA, the employee will be exposed to typical construction site conditions, including fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and varying weather conditions.
