Construction Safety Manager (CHST, SMS, CSMC) - Summary
- Lead safety management across multiple commercial construction sites, with a focus on educational and campus settings.
- Serve as an expert advisor on OSHA regulations, OCIP compliance, and site safety documentation.
- Foster a proactive safety culture and promote continuous improvement in all aspects of site safety operations.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, project managers, and field personnel.
- Report directly to senior management and support the Program Safety Manager as required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee safety compliance for multiple construction projects, performing daily site inspections and generating detailed safety reports.
- Monitor adherence to federal, state, and local safety regulations, particularly OSHA standards relevant to each project.
- Enforce compliance with OCIP requirements and procedures on all assigned job sites.
- Attend and lead safety discussions during construction meetings with project teams and contractors.
- Review and validate contractor safety submittals, including Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), Method of Procedures (MOP), Fall Protection Plans, and more.
- Evaluate and document incident reports, participate in safety stand-downs, and prepare lessons learned to enhance future safety protocols.
- Deliver safety orientation sessions to contractor safety representatives and ensure all workforce members are informed of current safety standards.
- Uphold a zero-tolerance policy for safety violations, implementing corrective actions as necessary to maintain a safe work environment.
- Provide flexible oversight across multiple active construction sites as project schedules and needs dictate.
- Communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with field teams and management to address safety concerns promptly and thoroughly.

Qualifications & Requirements
- 10 years of commercial construction experience in the United States with a General Contractor.
- 5 years of relevant experience in California with a contractor or major subcontractor.
- 2 years of experience managing safety on educational or campus construction projects.
- Proven experience overseeing field construction teams and coordinating safety on multiple, simultaneous projects.
- Expertise in demolition, renovation, new construction, and hazardous material remediation, including abatement and waste handling.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and other standard construction software tools.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with construction management staff and site teams.
- Experience preparing and submitting safety incident and daily construction reports.
- Ability to manage and report safety incidents in compliance with OSHA and owner requirements.
Ideal Candidate Snapshot
- Holds a valid Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or Certified Safety Manager Construction (CSMC) certificate.
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Preferred: Degree in construction management, safety engineering, or related field.
- Preferred: Additional safety and health certifications, such as a current 40-Hour HAZWOPER or OSHA 500 Trainer certification.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.
