The Construction Estimator plays a critical role in the successful execution of construction projects by providing detailed and accurate cost estimates and preconstruction services. As a Construction Estimator, you will work collaboratively with project managers, clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to organize and manage the preconstruction phase, ensuring that each project is well-planned, cost-effective, and delivered on schedule. In the role of Construction Estimator, you will be responsible for representing the company in a professional manner and supporting strategic initiatives. As a Construction Estimator, you will actively cultivate new business and manage relationships with existing clients, ensuring clients receive accurate estimates and value engineering services. You will oversee the entire preconstruction effort for large and complex projects, from conceptual design to the final construction document stage. This includes identifying project requirements, managing estimating processes, and coordinating bid evaluations and awards. Your ability to lead a project team and provide oversight will be vital to the success of each project.
You will be expected to interface with owners, architects, engineers, and subcontractors, resolving technical matters and providing reliable cost data throughout the preconstruction phase. Organizing the estimating team and mentoring junior estimators will be important aspects of your role, as will preparing comprehensive bid packages and subcontractor scopes of work. Your involvement in the award of subcontracts and transition to the construction team will ensure a smooth handoff and continuity throughout the project lifecycle.
The Construction Estimator position requires strong presentation and sales skills, especially when participating in client pursuits, RFPs, and interviews. Adherence to company safety standards, including the appropriate use of safety equipment and compliance with alcohol and drug use policies, is mandatory. Predictable, in-person attendance at the assigned location is essential for this safety-sensitive position.
To excel as a Construction Estimator, candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, along with at least three to five years of experience in construction management or as a general contractor. Demonstrated accomplishments, leadership, and communication skills are required, supported by verifiable work references. Proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and estimating applications is essential, as is the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
You will need a comprehensive understanding of commercial construction industry practices, including project budgeting, cost control, vendor selection, and client proposal preparation. Exceptional organizational, multi-tasking, and planning abilities, together with excellent verbal and written communication skills, will help you succeed in this dynamic environment. A strong customer service orientation and the capability to adapt quickly to changing demands are highly valued.
