Construction Estimator - Summary
The Construction Estimator is responsible for reviewing project documentation, preparing detailed cost analyses, and submitting competitive bids for a variety of construction projects. This role requires strong analytical skills, proficiency with estimating software, and the ability to foster positive relationships with project stakeholders, including owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and vendors.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Analyze and interpret project plans, specifications, contracts, and bid documents to determine project scope and requirements.
- Prepare precise quantity takeoffs and detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
- Develop and submit accurate and competitive bid proposals for commercial, public works, and site development construction projects.
- Solicit, evaluate, and compare quotations from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure the most competitive pricing.
- Identify scope gaps, assess project risks, and propose value engineering solutions during the estimating process.
- Maintain well-organized estimating files, cost databases, and records of historical pricing for future reference.
- Collaborate with project managers and field personnel to verify constructability and ensure estimates accurately reflect project scope.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and walkthroughs as required.
- Incorporate project revisions and addenda into estimates promptly and accurately.
- Assist with budget development and preliminary pricing exercises for upcoming projects.
- Communicate effectively with owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers to clarify project scope and pricing details.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with subcontractors and vendors to secure competitive pricing and reliable service.
- Support contract negotiations and respond to bid clarifications as needed.
- Analyze bid results to identify opportunities for improving future estimating accuracy and competitiveness.
- Monitor market trends, labor rates, and material costs to ensure estimates are current and competitive.
- Assist in project handoff to operations following successful bid awards.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 3-5 years of construction estimating experience, preferably in commercial, public works, civil, or site development projects.
- Proficiency in preparing detailed quantity takeoffs and competitive bid proposals.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, and construction drawings and specifications.
- Experience coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers, and project teams throughout the bidding process.
- Strong skills with estimating and takeoff software such as Bluebeam, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, HCSS, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Comprehensive knowledge of construction means and methods, material pricing, and cost estimating principles.
- Familiarity with prevailing wage and public works bidding highly preferred.
- Excellent analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Ideal Candidate Snapshot
