The Construction Estimator plays a vital role within the procurement department of a leading commercial general contracting company. As a Construction Estimator, you will be responsible for strategically developing and analyzing cost projections for large-scale commercial construction projects. Construction Estimator - Summary
- Serve as a key member of the procurement team, responsible for managing the full cycle of cost estimation for commercial construction projects.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with subcontractors and vendors to ensure comprehensive bid coverage and competitive pricing.
- Contribute to the success of the organization by leveraging creative planning, innovative problem solving, and thorough knowledge of construction processes.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Read and interpret project specifications to outline the scope and requirements of each bid.
- Collaborate with team members to discuss and establish bid strategies, identify potential challenges, and leverage project advantages.
- Define and prioritize major subcontractors, directing bid solicitation and coordination through platforms like SmartBid.
- Develop, write, and review detailed work scopes for all subcontracted trades and vendors involved in the project.
- Lead and conduct pre-bid meetings with operations staff and subcontractors to ensure project alignment and clarity.
- Assist operations teams in planning logistics, staging, and phasing to streamline project execution.
- Create, manage, and analyze bid day summaries and requirements spreadsheets to support accurate and comprehensive bidding.
- Perform precise quantity takeoffs for all applicable Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Divisions 1-46.
- Price both self-performed and subcontracted work items on a unit price basis, ensuring competitive and accurate cost projections.
- Utilize historical subcontractor and field production data to inform and enhance database pricing models.
- Build and strengthen existing subcontractor relationships while actively seeking new bidders to expand coverage and competitiveness.
- Review and execute necessary bid forms, including bid bonds and other compliance documentation.
- Thoroughly review estimates for accuracy, constructability, and potential risks to safeguard project outcomes.
- Assist and collaborate with the broader estimating department to promote teamwork and knowledge sharing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as an estimator within the commercial construction sector
- Demonstrated experience managing projects exceeding $5 million in value
- Strong familiarity with industry-standard concepts, practices, procedures, and project management software
- Ability to lead and take full charge of public works or private client bids
- Innovative and strategic mindset for obtaining comprehensive subcontractor bid coverage, including projects in new geographic regions
- Hands-on experience with self-performance of concrete and carpentry is highly desirable
- Advanced proficiency in Timberline, On-Screen Takeoff (OST), and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Willingness to work onsite at active construction projects as required, adapting to typical construction environments
