The Chief Engineer plays a crucial leadership role in maintaining and optimizing the functionality, safety, and efficiency of building facilities, equipment, and grounds. This position is central to ensuring that all operational aspects of the plant, including engineering, maintenance, transportation, and security, run smoothly and efficiently. The Chief Engineer is responsible for setting standards and organizing maintenance programs, delegating tasks to team members, and overseeing the implementation of these programs to meet company, financial, and regulatory requirements. The role also requires the Chief Engineer to build strong working relationships with the management team, various committees, staff, and external vendors. Through effective planning and resource management, the Chief Engineer upholds the highest standards of safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

One of the key responsibilities of the Chief Engineer is to ensure the safety and functionality of all equipment and systems within the facility. This includes developing and enforcing plant-wide preventative maintenance schedules, performing regular inspections, and coordinating repairs and upgrades as needed. The Chief Engineer also oversees the training and development of staff, ensuring that all personnel are proficient in plant operations and emergency response procedures. Additionally, the Chief Engineer manages the procurement of repair parts and supplies, maintaining a focus on cost-effectiveness and budgetary controls.

Another vital aspect of the role is compliance. The Chief Engineer maintains a thorough understanding of all relevant regulatory requirements, including wastewater and emissions standards, and ensures the plant operates within these guidelines. The position involves working closely with outside contractors for specialized repairs and project work, as well as being available for off-site plant startups and special projects as required. The Chief Engineer also fosters productive relationships with vendors to secure reliable and high-quality support for plant maintenance and repairs.

The ideal candidate for the Chief Engineer position will possess a strong background in engineering, facility management, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree in engineering or relevant military experience is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, mechanical, and plumbing blueprints. Advanced knowledge of plant systems, including electrical, boilers, hydraulics, compressed air, and mechanical equipment, is essential for success in this role. Strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, are also required.

Military experience, particularly in roles such as Electronics Technician, Interior Communications, Machinist Mate, Electricians Mate, Machinery Technician, or Damage Control Man, provides valuable transferrable skills and is highly regarded for this position. Such backgrounds bring an in-depth understanding of heavy-duty machinery, electrical schematics, boilers, chillers, hydraulics, and pneumatic pumps, all of which are integral to the Chief Engineer’s daily responsibilities.
