The Chief Engineer plays a critical leadership role in maintaining operational excellence and safety within facility management. As a key figure in plant operations, the Chief Engineer oversees the maintenance and reliability of all building systems, grounds, and equipment. This position requires a proactive approach to managing resources, scheduling preventative maintenance, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and safety guidelines. The Chief Engineer is responsible for orchestrating engineering, transportation, and security teams to deliver a safe, efficient, and clean operational environment. With a strong focus on budget management and regulatory adherence, the Chief Engineer actively collaborates with the management team, other departments, and relevant committees to ensure seamless plant operations and to meet organizational objectives.
In this role, the Chief Engineer will be tasked with developing and implementing maintenance schedules, training staff on emergency and plant protocols, and managing parts procurement for repairs and routine upkeep. This position also involves maintaining productive vendor relationships and overseeing external contractors engaged for plant repairs and projects. The Chief Engineer must remain available for off-site plant startups and special assignments, demonstrating flexibility and strong leadership in all situations. Ensuring departmental budgets are adhered to, with a focus on optimizing labor, parts, and supply costs, is a central responsibility. Compliance with environmental regulations, such as wastewater and emissions standards, is also a key component of the role, requiring ongoing monitoring and reporting.
The Chief Engineer position is well-suited for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or those possessing significant military experience in technical or engineering roles. The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge in all areas of plant maintenance, including electrical systems, boilers, hydraulics, mechanical equipment, and compressed air systems. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office and similar Windows-based applications. Experience in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, mechanical, and plumbing blueprints is required for success in this role.
