Cardiovascular Surgery Physician Assistant (PA-C) - Summary
- Supports cardiovascular surgeons in all aspects of patient care, from preoperative evaluation to postoperative management.
- Acts as a liaison between surgeons, patients, families, and the broader healthcare team.
- Participates in a variety of surgical and clinical activities to optimize patient outcomes in cardiovascular care settings.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct preoperative patient assessments, including history taking, physical examinations, and review of diagnostic tests.
- Assist in surgical procedures, including vein harvesting, wound closure, and intraoperative patient management under the direct supervision of cardiovascular surgeons.
- Provide postoperative care, including monitoring patient recovery, managing surgical sites, and providing patient and family education on recovery protocols.
- Perform routine and emergency clinical tasks, such as inserting and managing central lines, chest tubes, and arterial lines as permitted by state licensure and hospital policy.
- Document all patient interactions, surgical procedures, and follow-up care in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate patient discharge planning, including writing discharge summaries and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless transitions of care.
- Participate in patient rounds, case conferences, and quality improvement initiatives within the cardiovascular surgery department.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program.
- Current certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Valid and unrestricted medical license to practice as a Physician Assistant.
- Prior experience in cardiovascular surgery, cardiology, or relevant surgical specialties preferred.
- Strong knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and surgical techniques.
