Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA-C)

If you are seeking an advanced clinical role in one of the nation’s leading cardiothoracic surgery programs, this Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA-C) position offers a unique opportunity to join a distinguished and innovative surgical team. This position is designed for professionals who are passionate about surgical first assist and delivering comprehensive perioperative care to adult cardiac and thoracic surgery patients. The hospital is renowned for its state-of-the-art robotic surgery capabilities and is one of only a select group of centers nationwide offering both robotic cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures. The team is composed of three highly skilled cardiac surgeons and six advanced practice providers (APPs), all dedicated to excellence in patient outcomes and professional growth.

As a Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA-C), you will play a pivotal role in a robust surgical environment that covers the full spectrum of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve surgery, aortic aneurysm and dissection repair, pulmonary resections, and decortications. While the team does not perform ventricular assist device placements, the exposure to complex, high-volume cases provides a rich learning and professional development experience. The collaborative and supportive nature of the physician assistant team ensures high-quality patient care and fosters a positive work environment.

The ideal candidate will bring prior experience as a surgical first assist, with a strong commitment to the operating room and an ability to work autonomously within a multidisciplinary team. The position is primarily focused on inpatient and operating room responsibilities, with the opportunity to participate in endoscopic and open vein as well as radial artery harvesting. Additional duties include managing patient care on the cardiothoracic surgery inpatient unit, providing night call coverage on weeknights and weekends (anticipated 1 in 6 rotation), and participating in rounds and call from home for operating room cases. Outpatient clinic care is rare but may be required on occasion. The hospital employs full-time intensivists for patient management, and floor patients are primarily managed by physician assistants, ensuring a balanced and manageable workload.

The working hours for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA-C) typically range from 7am to 5pm, five days per week, with rotating weekend responsibilities. The call schedule is structured to provide work-life balance, with the majority of call duties managed from home. This role is ideal for candidates who thrive in a dynamic, high-volume surgical environment and who are seeking a position that offers both autonomy and the support of experienced colleagues.

This Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA-C) role offers the chance to work in a region with a strong reputation for advanced cardiac and thoracic care, in a facility that is recognized for clinical excellence and innovation. The combination of a supportive team, cutting-edge technology, and a commitment to professional development makes this an exceptional career move for a dedicated PA-C.
