We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our dynamic cardiac surgery team on a locum tenens basis. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to one of the region’s busiest cardiac surgery programs, focusing exclusively on nighttime coverage in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality pre- and post-operative care to patients undergoing complex cardiovascular procedures.
Our Western Tennessee facility is proud to maintain a high standard of advanced cardiac care, and we are looking for an advanced practice provider who is proficient in all aspects of cardiothoracic ICU procedures and critical care management. This assignment is structured as a 3–6 month locum contract, with the potential for extension based on mutual agreement and facility needs. The schedule consists of a 7 nights on, 7 nights off rotation, providing a balanced work-life arrangement for the incoming provider.
As a Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will be responsible for managing patients throughout their ICU stay, collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, intensivists, and nursing staff. Your expertise will be critical in ensuring optimal outcomes for patients recovering from major cardiac surgery.

Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA) / Nurse Practitioner (NP) - Summary

Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive patient care in the Cardiothoracic ICU during nighttime hours
- Perform and assist with advanced cardiothoracic procedures and critical care interventions
- Monitor and manage patients’ post-operative progress, identifying and responding to complications
- Provide pre-operative assessments and participate in patient education
- Work collaboratively with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, nurses, and ancillary staff
- Document patient progress, update care plans, and communicate effectively with the healthcare team
- Ensure adherence to protocols and best practices for cardiothoracic critical care

Qualifications & Requirements
- Current national certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (NP)
- Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
- 1–3 years of recent experience in cardiothoracic surgery or critical care setting
- Demonstrated proficiency in cardiothoracic ICU procedures and patient management
- Eligibility for state licensure (with expedited processing available)
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently during night shifts
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
