Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA-C) - Summary
- Key advanced practice provider specializing in assisting with cardiothoracic surgical procedures and patient management
- Works directly with cardiothoracic surgeons and multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes
- Participates in a full spectrum of care, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases

Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments and prepare patients for cardiothoracic surgery
- Assist the surgical team during cardiothoracic operations, including first or second assist in the operating room
- Perform invasive procedures such as chest tube insertion, central line placement, and arterial line insertion under supervision and according to credentialing policies
- Monitor patients in the intensive care and step-down units, responding to acute changes and coordinating care transitions
- Order, interpret, and act on appropriate laboratory and imaging studies
- Provide postoperative care, including wound management, medication adjustments, patient education, and discharge planning
- Document all patient encounters and clinical decisions accurately in the medical record
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to develop and implement care plans
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to cardiothoracic care
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with advances in cardiothoracic surgery and patient management

Qualifications & Requirements
- Current Physician Assistant (PA-C) certification and licensure as required by state regulations
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
- Prior experience in cardiothoracic surgery or a related surgical specialty is preferred but not required
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and high-quality care
- BLS and ACLS certification required; additional specialty certifications are a plus
