The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA-C) will be primarily involved in the perioperative management of adult cardiothoracic surgery patients. This includes working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other allied health professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The scope of practice covers a wide array of adult cardiac surgery cases, including but not limited to coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair and replacement, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), MitraClip procedures, thoracic vascular interventions, as well as both sternotomy and right thoracotomy approaches. Additionally, adult general thoracic cases such as thoracotomies, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgeries (VATS), lobectomies, and pneumonectomies are integral parts of the case mix.

As a Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA-C), you will have the opportunity to first assist in the operating room during complex procedures, perform endoscopic conduit harvests, and provide comprehensive perioperative and postoperative care in both the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) and stepdown settings. The role may also include occasional placement of chest tubes, central lines, and monitoring lines, with training and support available for those seeking to further develop these technical skills. Call coverage is required and typically shared among team members, focusing primarily on inpatient and operating room needs, with minimal outpatient responsibilities. Notably, call is not expected to be in-house, offering flexibility for work-life balance.
