The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA-C) plays a pivotal role within the cardiothoracic surgery team, providing advanced clinical support to surgeons and ensuring the highest quality of care for cardiac surgery patients. The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA-C) is responsible for a broad spectrum of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative patient care duties. This includes, but is not limited to, independently performing endoscopic vein and radial artery harvesting, assisting in cardiac surgical cases such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), aortic and mitral valve replacements or repairs (AVR, MVR), aortic dissections, aortic aneurysm repairs, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) cannulations. The role also encompasses procedures such as central venous access placement, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion and removal, and intra-aortic balloon pump management.
In addition to patient care, the Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (PA-C) will participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives, collaborate with other advanced practice providers, and contribute to the training and mentoring of junior team members. Regular communication with attending surgeons, nursing staff, and other allied health professionals is essential to optimize patient outcomes and foster an environment of continuous learning and best practices.
