The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CT PA) plays a vital role in supporting a high-volume cardiothoracic surgery program. As a key member of the surgical team, the CT PA is responsible for assisting in advanced cardiothoracic procedures in the operating room, including endoscopic vein harvesting, radial artery harvesting, and providing comprehensive intraoperative support for a variety of open-heart surgeries. This full-time, contract opportunity is designed for experienced Advanced Practice Providers who are proficient in the specialized skills required for cardiothoracic surgery and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced hospital environment. As a Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CT PA), you will contribute to a large, dynamic surgical program performing more than 1,500 heart surgeries annually. The role includes direct involvement in complex cases such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair and replacement, heart and lung transplantation, and procedures requiring mechanical circulatory support, such as left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CT PA) works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant (CT PA) - Summary

Duties & Responsibilities
- First assist in the operating room for all open-heart surgical procedures, including CABG, valve repair/replacement, and transplantation.
- Harvest conduit, veins, and arteries via endoscopic or open techniques, including endoscopic vein and radial artery harvesting.
- Support heart and lung transplant cases, as well as procedures involving mechanical circulatory support (MCS) such as LVAD and ECMO.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of surgical procedures and patient care activities.
- Participate in ongoing quality assurance and improvement initiatives within the cardiothoracic surgery program.
- Provide patient education and support for preoperative and postoperative recovery.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Current Physician Assistant (PA) license and certification, with specialized experience in cardiothoracic surgery.
- Proficiency in endoscopic vein harvesting and radial artery harvesting.
- Experience as a first assist in a high-volume cardiothoracic operating room setting.
- Strong knowledge of open-heart and transplantation procedures, including familiarity with LVAD and ECMO cases.
- Excellent communication, clinical, and interpersonal skills.
