The Cardiothoracic Nurse Practitioner (NP, APP) collaborates closely with other healthcare professionals, including physician assistants, fellows, and specialized teams such as Heart Failure/Transplant and Mechanical Support, to ensure comprehensive patient management from pre-operative assessment through post-operative recovery.
This full-time opportunity is tailored for experienced nurse practitioners who are well-versed in the unique demands of cardiothoracic and cardiac critical care. The position involves approximately 50% of the time dedicated to ICU responsibilities, minimal time in the OR, and does not require outpatient clinic coverage. Cardiothoracic Nurse Practitioner (NP, APP) - Summary
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in a busy cardiothoracic surgery program.
- Deliver care in both the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) and operating room (OR) settings.
- Participate in patient rounding with Heart Failure/Transplant and Mechanical Support teams.
- Contribute to the management of critically ill cardiac and thoracic surgical patients.
- Support the program’s high standards of clinical excellence and patient safety.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide advanced clinical care and assessment to cardiothoracic surgery patients in the CVICU and OR.
- Perform comprehensive patient evaluations, monitoring, and documentation throughout the perioperative period.
- Collaborate with attending physicians, fellows, and specialized teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Assist in managing complex cases involving heart failure, transplant, and mechanical circulatory support as needed.
- Participate in patient rounds, handoffs, and multidisciplinary discussions.
- Educate patients and families about surgical procedures, recovery processes, and post-operative care requirements.
- Adhere to evidence-based protocols, safety standards, and infection control procedures.
- Demonstrate flexibility in work schedules, including day, night, and weekend shifts as required.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited program.
- Current, unrestricted state licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) as applicable.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in cardiac critical care as a registered nurse (RN) or at least one year of experience as a nurse practitioner in cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, cardiology, or critical care.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency in the operating room environment.
- Proven ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and variable shifts.
