Cardiothoracic ICU Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Physician Assistant (PA) opportunities offer a rewarding experience for advanced practice providers who are passionate about delivering high-level patient care in a cardiac critical care setting. This dynamic clinical role is ideal for professionals with prior experience managing complex cardiac and surgical ICU patients, seeking to contribute to a collaborative, multidisciplinary intensive care environment. The position is based in a prestigious healthcare facility in Baltimore, Maryland, with opportunities to work alongside a dedicated team of cardiac surgeons and cardiologists.
As a Cardiothoracic ICU Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA), you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive care to critically ill patients in both the Cardiac ICU and Surgical ICU. The role provides a significant degree of clinical autonomy, allowing you to actively participate in all facets of patient management, while also collaborating closely with cardiac intensivists and the broader care team. This position is structured for full-time coverage, with a schedule consisting of three to four day shifts per week. The ideal candidate will be comfortable stepping into a fast-paced, 100% ICU-based environment, and will demonstrate proficiency in managing cardiac surgery and cardiology patients, including those undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve procedures.
Responsibilities involve overseeing the care of patients with acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, heart failure, advanced arrhythmias, and heart block. The Cardiothoracic ICU Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Physician Assistant (PA) will not be required to cover ventricular assist devices (VADs), transplant patients, or participate in cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) cases. Emphasis is placed on high-quality clinical practice, technical expertise, and effective teamwork. Duties include assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, procedural skills such as arterial line and central line placement, and chest tube management. The role also encompasses the development and implementation of individualized care plans, including the initiation and prescription of medications, all under the collaborative supervision of cardiac intensivists and in compliance with established protocols.
To qualify, candidates must possess active BLS and ACLS certifications, as well as appropriate national certifications: NCCPA for Physician Assistants, or AANC/AANP for Nurse Practitioners. Maryland CDS and DEA licenses are mandatory. A minimum of two years of hands-on experience in perioperative management of cardiac surgery and intensive care unit patients is required, ensuring that new team members are practice-ready and able to contribute from day one.
The hospital is recognized for its commitment to patient-centered care, clinical excellence, and ongoing professional development. Advanced practice providers joining this ICU team will find a culture of mutual support, continuous learning, and opportunities to engage in best practices within cardiac and surgical intensive care.
