The Cardiothoracic ICU Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) is a critical advanced practice provider role focused on the delivery of high-quality patient care to individuals undergoing complex cardiothoracic surgical procedures. This full-time position is dedicated to providing expert care in a critical care setting, specifically the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Working closely under the direction of cardiothoracic surgeons, this role involves managing patients throughout their preoperative and postoperative care while practicing at the top of licensure and providing a high level of clinical autonomy. This role offers the opportunity to work night shifts consisting of three 12-hour shifts per week, ensuring consistent patient care during evenings and nights.

The Cardiothoracic ICU NP or PA plays a pivotal role in the patient care continuum, focusing on the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of cardiothoracic surgical patients outside the operating room. The successful candidate will utilize their advanced clinical knowledge to perform essential procedures and coordinate patient care activities. The role is specifically designed for highly skilled providers with a background in cardiothoracic surgery, critical care, or hospital medicine, who are adept at working in high-acuity, fast-paced environments. Candidates with direct experience in inpatient cardiothoracic or cardiac settings are highly preferred, while those with strong critical care or hospitalist backgrounds will also be considered.

As a valued member of the multidisciplinary team, the Cardiothoracic ICU Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will be responsible for clinical tasks such as the removal of chest tubes, sutures, and temporary pacing wires, all under the supervision and direction of attending surgeons and chief residents. This position requires the ability to quickly adapt to rapidly changing clinical situations and work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism in all interactions.

Applicants must have completed an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program and be licensed or license-eligible. Nurse Practitioners must hold an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP or AGACNP) certification, and Physician Assistants must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are required, with a minimum of one year of direct experience in a high-acuity clinical specialty preferred.
