The Cardiac Perfusionist (CCP) plays a vital role within the cardiovascular surgical team, contributing specialized expertise to support heart surgeries and related procedures. As a key healthcare professional, the Cardiac Perfusionist is responsible for operating the heart-lung machine and other advanced extracorporeal circulation equipment during cardiac surgeries. This role is essential for monitoring and managing the patient’s physiological status, ensuring optimal oxygenation and circulation throughout complex operations. Working in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other medical personnel, the Cardiac Perfusionist upholds the highest standards of clinical care, safety, and technical proficiency in every case.

- Monitors and manages physiological parameters to ensure optimal patient outcomes
- Collaborates closely with surgical and anesthesiology teams
- Maintains expertise in the latest perfusion techniques and technologies
- Ensures adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards
- Prepare, operate, and maintain heart-lung machines and other extracorporeal circulation devices
- Monitor patient’s physiological status during procedures, including blood gases, electrolytes, and hemodynamic parameters
- Administer blood products, medications, and fluids as prescribed, in accordance with surgical protocols
- Keep accurate records of perfusion activities, device settings, and patient responses
- Participate in preoperative planning and postoperative patient management discussions
- Respond rapidly to changes in patient condition, troubleshooting equipment as necessary
- Maintain and calibrate perfusion equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety
- Facilitate or participate in research and quality improvement initiatives related to perfusion science

- Bachelor’s degree or higher in perfusion technology, cardiovascular science, or a related field
- Current Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) credential required
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications
- Proficiency in the operation and troubleshooting of extracorporeal circulation equipment
- Strong knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology
