AI Engineer - Summary
As an AI Engineer, you will be entrusted with designing and developing a Large Language Model (LLM) Gateway, serving as a central API layer to unify access for all application teams throughout the organization. Your contributions will establish the technological foundation necessary for advancing AI and machine learning capabilities at scale. The AI Engineer role is responsible for setting up mediation pipelines to ensure compliance, security, and privacy, including prompt cleansing, personal information detection and masking, and other critical controls. You will also drive the integration of advanced retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions and shared vector databases, empowering enterprise-wide AI use cases. Your expertise will directly influence the organization's ability to innovate securely within the AI landscape.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of an enterprise-grade LLM Gateway, centralizing API access for diverse application teams.
- Architect and implement mediation pipelines for prompt cleansing, personally identifiable information (PII) detection and masking, establishing guardrails, and enforcing throttling and quota mechanisms.
- Develop and oversee centralized controls to ensure organizational compliance, governance, and robust security across all LLM usage.
- Integrate retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) capabilities and manage shared vector databases to support a broad range of enterprise AI solutions.
- Apply principles of distributed systems and formal methods to ensure the scalability, correctness, and resilience of AI infrastructures.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve system issues and continuously enhance AI system performance.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in AI engineering and enterprise machine learning.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Advanced degree (M.S. preferred) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field.
- Extensive experience in designing and integrating Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt/response mediation, and GenAI system architectures.
- Hands-on experience with vector databases such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus, FAISS, Vespa, or pgvector, as well as proficiency with embedding models.
- Strong knowledge of information retrieval techniques including dense retrieval, semantic search, filtering, and hybrid approaches.
- Demonstrated expertise in building distributed, high-scale backend systems with strict governance and security requirements.
- Proficiency in applying distributed systems engineering principles and formal verification methods to ensure system robustness.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical teams alike.
